Cell phone tower batteries cost a lot of money and therefore are becoming more and more the target of thieves. Although these batteries are heavy, weighing almost 90kg each, it does not deter thieves to steal them and load them in a bakkie (I wonder how much time that takes?).
According to a recent article in BusinessTech, police received information about a bakkie traveling on the N2 towards Port Shepstone and that the bakkie in question was loaded with 48 cell phone tower batteries to the value of R480 000. Thank goodness the police got a tip-off and the suspects were caught.
But how often does this happen? It must cost cell phone companies thousands of rands with all the towers they have if these batteries get feet.
That is why it is important to take technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT)seriously. Through a dashboard in the cloud and notification through platforms such as JSON, SMS or email these incidences can be detected from the start when there is the unauthorized entry right through to tracking the units as they are moved.
Comparing the cost of installing such a system to the cost of replacing the batteries is a fraction of the price. As the saying goes: “Voorsorg is beter as nasorg”!
